  • Carbon Tracer Enhancements

You may have seen in our previous news item Carbon Tracer App Launches that we designed and developed a mobile app called Carbon Tracer for our clients Western Power Distribution in collaboration with the Carbon Trust. Alongside the app there is also a Carbon Tracer website that allows customers to find out further detail about where their energy comes from and its carbon impact. Recently we’ve made a number of significant updates to the Carbon Tracer site as part of an ongoing programme of improvements based on customer feedback and suggestions.

The latest updates allow customers to find more granular information than ever before about the carbon intensity and the mix of energy that is being supplied to them. The updates mean that they can now compare the carbon intensity of their energy down to a substation (or Bulk Supply Point) level. The website’s initial user interface provides a Google Map based overview of Western Power Distribution’s full area of operation which includes East and West Midlands, South Wales and the South West. Inputting a postcode or clicking on the map shows the area that a particular substation supplies and information about the energy mix in that area.

Enhancements have also been made to the type of data and level of detail available when customers select specific substations. This includes information like how wind turbines work and what is their optimal wind speed for output, what the ‘primaries’ are on a BSP, graphs demonstrating how solar noon works and more.

The Carbon Tracer allows customers to view a live breakdown of their energy mix but it also allows them to view historical data from the past 7 days as well as a forecast of how much energy might come from renewables in the next 7 days. The recent updates have include the use of a new API that gives better short term data about the mix of generation sources on the national grid.

You can find out more about the Carbon Tracer here or try it yourself at carbontracer.westernpower.co.uk. The App is available via the Google Play and Apple App stores

Western Power distribution supply almost 8 million customers, the Carbon Tracer website and app now give them unprecedented access to detailed information on their energy mix and the carbon intensity of that energy which helps them to make smarter energy choices. This project is just one part of Western Power Distributions commitment to delivering innovation and industry leading customer service in the utilities industry.

As well as Western Power Distribution we have experience of working with other electricity Domain Network Operators (DNOs) including Northern Powergrid, as well as the Energy Networks Association (ENA) which represents the industry. More recently we have also started working with Northumbrian Water to develop a water management and data analytics tool.
