Digital Patient Information Resource for NHS

    • Developed a digital information resource tailored for heart or lung transplant patients, offering easily accessible guidance on the transplant journey and post-transplant care.
    • Customised for the esteemed heart and lung transplant centre at the Freeman Hospital, a part of Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
    • Designed interactive content with user guidance, prioritising patient-centricity to empower individuals and their support network with essential information throughout the process.

    The Ambition

Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the Freeman Heart and Lung Transplant Association, and Northumbria University collaborated to develop an online resource offering comprehensive information for heart and lung transplant patients.

The resource hub aimed to provide patients and their circle of care with all the information needed pre- and post-operation to decrease potential complications and increase positive outcomes.

    What We Did

We've developed a comprehensive digital patient information platform featuring guided content such as videos, animations, and detailed textual explanations for deeper understanding. This empowers patients by providing easily digestible information, enabling them to gain full comprehension and control over their healthcare journey.

Additionally, clinicians can monitor patient engagement with the platform, allowing for more personalised in-person support as necessary.

Service design with accessibility in mind

Ensuring the design and development of this digital service align with high standards of accessibility is crucial. This involved integrating our expertise in service design industry standards with the NHS's Digital Service Manual.

To achieve a well-designed service accessible to all, we employed appropriate technology, implemented a design system, and adhered to design principles to ensure consistency and accessibility across all aspects of the user interface. Furthermore, we prioritised achieving a minimum level of WC3 AA accessibility compliance for all web-based content.

    Engaging interactives and success stories

The resource hub actively involves patients by offering interactive content that addresses the assessment process, the transplantation procedure, and life post-transplant. Step-by-step animations and videos serve to elucidate the transplant journey in an inclusive and easily comprehensible manner. Additionally, the video content incorporates real-life patient case studies to provide further insight into the transplant experience.

Built with an easy-to-use content management system

For this project, the requirements led us to choose a widely used open-source platform as the foundation for the resource hub. After considering the project's overall needs, WordPress emerged as the best choice. WordPress provides the Trust's staff with more flexibility over the content with a well-supported content management system.
