Turning electricity safety into an interactive adventure

    • Designed and built an interactive digital learning platform focused on electricity safety for young people
    • Created an engaging, game-led experience combining storytelling, animation and behaviour-led learning design
    • Developed a scalable platform later adapted and rolled out across multiple UK electricity distribution networks

    The Ambition

As part of its wider education and outreach work, SP Electricity North West wanted to move beyond traditional classroom presentations and printed materials to create an experience that would genuinely capture the attention of younger audiences, while supporting key KS2 learning objectives around electricity, safety, and problem-solving.

We worked with them to develop an interactive game, designed to help young people understand the dangers associated with electrical infrastructure and learn how to stay safe around equipment they may encounter in everyday life.

Set within the fictional town of Voltzville, the game challenges users to identify 13 different electricity hazards, ranging from flying drones near overhead lines and playing near substations to damaged streetlights, excavation sites and vandalised electrical equipment. Each scenario is based on real-world risks that electricity distributors actively educate communities about as part of their wider public safety responsibilities.

Created at the dawn of the pandemic, the game also needed to support both classroom-based and remote learning environments. Designed to work as either a teacher-led group activity or an independent digital experience, the solution gave schools and electricity providers a scalable way to continue delivering safety education at a time when face-to-face outreach activity was becoming increasingly challenging.

Alongside the educational objectives, the project also formed part of a broader ambition to inspire curiosity around electricity, engineering and future careers in STEM subjects by making learning feel more interactive, creative and approachable for younger audiences.

    What we did

Designing an engaging learning experience for school groups

Enigma designed the platform around a simple but highly effective learning principle, interaction improves retention.

Rather than presenting children with static information or passive video content, the experience encourages users to actively explore a fictional town environment, identify hazards and complete short learning exercises linked to real-world electricity safety scenarios. The experience is designed to work both as an individual activity and as a teacher-led classroom session, creating flexibility for schools and outreach teams alike.

Importantly, the platform was developed during a period where remote learning became increasingly important, allowing electricity distributors to continue delivering educational outreach digitally when in-person school visits were limited.

    Applying behaviour-led digital learning principles

The platform was designed using proven “teach-back” learning approaches commonly used within digital education and behavioural change platforms.

After identifying a hazard, users are presented with short educational content followed by interactive quiz questions designed to reinforce understanding and confirm comprehension before progressing.

This approach helps move users from passive viewing into active participation, increasing engagement and supporting information retention.

The structure also gives teachers additional opportunities to facilitate discussion and conversation around the scenarios being explored, helping turn the platform into a collaborative classroom activity rather than simply a standalone game.

Bringing safety education to life through interactive storytelling

At the heart of the experience is a fully illustrated and animated interactive town environment filled with characters, vehicles, landmarks and hidden safety hazards.

Enigma’s design and development teams worked closely with the client’s internal team to create a visually rich environment that included real-world situations that would hold children’s attention for an entire classroom session while encouraging curiosity and exploration.

Each hazard was carefully mapped to genuine electricity safety risks identified by the client, including scenarios involving overhead power lines, substations, kites, drones, graffiti, construction sites and damaged street infrastructure.

Alongside the core educational content, the team added additional layers of detail, humour and animation throughout the environment to make the experience feel playful, memorable and enjoyable for younger audiences.

Creating a scalable platform for multiple distributors

Following the success of the original project, Enigma adapted the platform for use by additional electricity distribution networks across the UK.

The platform architecture allowed branding, characters and educational assets to be reconfigured for different organisations while maintaining the core functionality and learning experience.

This scalable approach enabled distributors to deliver consistent educational messaging while tailoring the experience to their own audiences, branding and outreach programmes.

    Combining creativity with technical development

The project required close collaboration across Enigma’s design, animation and development teams.

The interactive town environment incorporated animated assets, moving vehicles, character interactions, hidden discoveries and contextual prompts designed to keep users engaged throughout the experience.

The development team also built supporting functionality including:

    • Interactive hazard detection
    • Animated educational content
    • Quiz and scoring systems
    • Progress tracking
    • Teacher-friendly classroom delivery features
    • Printable completion certificates
    • Flexible CMS-driven content updates

The result was a highly engaging educational platform that balanced creativity, accessibility and practical learning outcomes.

    Results

The game provides a scalable and engaging way to deliver electricity safety education to younger audiences, particularly important in a highly legislated environment.

By combining interactive gameplay with structured learning techniques, the experience helped modernise traditional educational outreach while creating a format that worked equally well in classrooms, at public events and through remote learning environments.

The success of the project also led to the platform being adapted and rolled out for additional electricity distributors, extending its reach and long-term value beyond the original brief.
