Paul Gleave, Digital Lead, Carlisle Brass
The Ambition
As the UK’s largest specialised developer of architectural ironmongery, Carlisle Brass have a reputation for delivering high quality products and customer service. They approached us when they outgrew their previous digital agency and wanted to take the opportunity to create a market leading B2B eCommerce site that would also futureproof their business.
What We Did
Carlisle Brass had an existing Magento 1.9 site that was being well used by their customers. To enable us to create an effective digital strategy for the future and map out the migration path to Magento 2 we adopted their existing site.
This work included custom developments to integrate the site with internal systems.
Digital Strategy
Following the successful adoption of the original site and the creation of a long term digital strategy we began development of a new eCommerce site using the Magento 2 platform.
This work has culminated in a site that will enable Carlisle Brass to continue their market leadership and will drive their future growth ambitions.
Magento Site Adoption
With an existing Magento 1 site, Carlisle Brass wanted to maximise their investment while also properly planning for the future with a strategy that would allow them to grow sales and continue to lead their sector.
We are regularly asked by clients to adopt their existing websites, this makes sense both in terms of making the most of previous expenditure and also gives us the time and space to develop a robust digital strategy that plans for the future.
System Integration
One of the key areas that was identified as an issue during the adoption process was the ineffective integration of Carlisle Brass’s custom built internal pricing system which contains the details for over 5,000 products each with multiple options. Due to the complexities of their pricing structure and B2B business model the existing implementation was severely impacting the performance of the site due to the way the previous agency had set it up.
Working with the team at Carlisle Brass and using our extensive experience of B2B eCommerce and Magento, we were able to properly integrate the systems using a custom development that significantly increased the speed and usability of the website.
Magento 2
Following the site adoption and resultant digital strategy work, the decision was taken that the most appropriate direction or the project to take would be to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2. This is a process we have successfully navigated for a number of clients and Carlisle Brass were no different.
Magento provides its own well documented migration path between version 1 and 2 but we also have our own processes and systems in place to help make the process as smooth and seamless as possible. This is especially important for busy eCommerce sites with complex product models and a large number of existing accounts making regular orders.
Custom Magento Developments
Once we setup and configured the Magento 2 platform for Carlisle Brass we built a number of custom developments, creating enhanced features to help them realise their strategic goals.
This included developing a brand new quick order function that’s perfect for their wholesale clients as well as more advanced filtering and personalised pricing matrixes on product pages to encourage higher quantity orders.
