  • Western Power launch new Network Capacity Map

We are thrilled to share our latest work for Western Power Distribution (WPD), the electricity distribution network operator (DNO) for the Midlands, South West and Wales.

The network capacity map provides an indication of WPD’s network, and allows users to view the capability to connect large-scale developments to major substations.

Western Power delivers electricity to over 7.8 million customers via a network consisting of 220,000 km of overhead lines and underground cables, and 185,000 substations. Helping new customers connect to the electricity network is one of the most critical services that they provide. It enables new homes to be built and occupied, new businesses to start trading and new forms of generation to produce energy.

The mapping application agregates and visualises data which is taken from numerous streams including Western Power's Long Term Development Statement (LTDS), Generation Headroom, which uses up-to-date quotation statistics incorporating connected generation, accepted but not yet connected generation and quoted generation figures. The map also displays National Grid Transmission's (NGT) Statement of Works. Using traffic light colours allow users to easily identify areas of the network where a connection is more likely to be achieved.

This new Network Capacity Map is integrated into Western Powers website and forms a crucial part of their connections engagement strategy as part of their quarter one 2017 ‘ICE’ deliverable (Incentive on Connections Engagement) to regulator Ofgem.

“I just wanted to thank everyone at Enigma for their efforts in getting the new capacity map online. It has been a proper team effort to pull it all together and it has been a pleasure!”

James Bennett, Innovation & Low Carbon Networks Engineer, Western Power Distribution
