  • Superdrug Launch Digital Pharmacy Service

Back in August we announced that we had started working with Superdrug and that we would reveal more about the project at a later date – Well today is the day! We are proud to announce that we have been working with Superdrug to create an online prescription service for their customers.

Superdrug are one of the most recognisable brands on the high street and the second largest health and beauty chain in the UK. Millions of customers use their retail stores, pharmacies and ecommerce site superdrug.com every week.

The new digital prescriptions service we have been developing is part of Superdrug’s 25th anniversary of offering pharmacy services. The company is also investing in newly designed counters and dispensaries in 125 of its stores in 2018. The launch of the service, which will allow patients to us the Electronic Prescriptions service (EPS) to order medication online, is part of Superdrug’s ongoing ‘digital innovation’ plans and adds an important customer service to their online offering.

In a recent interview about the launch in Chemist & Druggist magazine Michael Henry, Superdrug’s healthcare director, commented “Patients will be able to manage and order repeat prescriptions, and have it delivered to their home, without the need to come in and visit a pharmacy. People can still access advice from a Superdrug pharmacist in a bricks-and-mortar store. But…the industry has moved in this direction in the last couple of years, and we’re following,”

With a number of recent new entrants in the online prescription market Superdrug wanted to replicate their high quality offline pharmacy services in a digital setting for customers. As a result they approached us because of our reputation as a leading digital agency and our expertise in the Pharmacy sector working with clients like Rowlands Pharmacy.

The online prescription service we have created has been specifically designed to be easy to use for Superdrug’s existing customer base as well as attractive for new customers. From sign up through medicine selection to delivery, the system has been designed to make what can be a complex process as simple as possible. Delivering the best in class is a key diver for Superdrug as they have ambitious plans across their entire digital strategy.

As well as a fully featured, responsive customer facing website the project required the development of a robust, secure and integrated back end system. For example the system uses data from NHS Digital in order to ensure it has the latest data for both surgeries and medicines, which allows the Superdrug Online Pharmacy service to provide an up to date surgery and medicine lookup tool for its users. There are also features like a secure messaging system to record any communication between pharmacists and customers.

Michael Henry, Superdrug’s healthcare director added that the development of the Superdrug Online Pharmacy “marks our intent and our focus on digital innovation as being a real driver of our plans for the future”.
