Flexibility Market Platform for National Grid supports net zero goals

Enigma has recently delivered the latest version of the Flexibility Market Platform it has built for National Grid, and continues to support. Branded MarketGateway, this is a powerful, data-driven platform designed to support the UK’s transition to a flexible low-carbon electricity system. This platform enables flexibility service providers to participate in the growing flexibility market, helping balance demand on the electricity grid while supporting the country’s broader Net Zero goals.

The ambition behind the project was bold. National Grid’s Distribution System Operator (DSO) team wanted a platform that could manage increasing network demand, integrate seamlessly with business systems and market aggregators, and deliver an intuitive experience for a wide range of users. From the start, the guiding principle was clear: build for flexibility. Enigma’s design and development process, underpinned by stakeholder workshops and a continuous improvement model, ensured the system could evolve alongside industry regulations and shifting user needs.

The result is a fully integrated platform connecting internal National Grid systems with external market actors, enabling real-time data exchange and seamless bidding and trading of opportunities. The platform supports participants in managing their own accounts, streamlines complex processes with clear user journeys, and ensures compliance through carefully crafted system logic and terminology.

The platform now serves over 110 registered organisations and manages around 6,000 meterable units, with approximately 100 new trade opportunities projected each week. What began as a pre-qualification tool has grown into a vital part of the UK’s energy flexibility infrastructure and it’s now seen as a model for others across the sector. Continuous collaboration between the team here at Enigma and National Grid has ensured the platform remains scalable, resilient, and ready to meet the demands of the future.
