Enigma Interactive has completed the development of a new Experience Based Design (EBD) survey platform for NHS Elect, providing a secure, accessible and scalable digital solution to support the collection of patient, carer and staff feedback across NHS organisations.
The platform is designed to replace an existing survey tool with a more flexible system capable of supporting the entire survey lifecycle, from creating reusable templates and distributing surveys to collecting responses and generating reports. Built around NHS Elect's Experience Based Design methodology, it allows surveys to be mapped to specific stages of a patient or staff journey, helping organisations better understand experiences and identify opportunities to improve services. The system also supports multiple question types, role-based access, QR code distribution, automated reporting and CSV exports for further analysis.
A key focus throughout the project was ensuring the platform met the high standards expected of modern NHS digital services. The interface was developed using NHS Service Standard principles and the NHS Design System, while meeting WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility requirements to ensure surveys can be completed easily across a wide range of devices and by users with different accessibility needs. The result is a mobile-first platform that works equally well whether accessed on a personal smartphone, an NHS tablet or via QR codes displayed in clinical settings.
The platform has been designed with future growth in mind, enabling NHS Elect to expand its Experience Based Design work across more organisations while continuing to evolve the system through additional functionality. For healthcare providers and organisations delivering large-scale engagement programmes, the project demonstrates how thoughtfully designed digital platforms can make complex survey management more efficient while improving the quality and accessibility of the data collected.
