The planning, development and build of a new digital platform can mean a significant investment of time and resource - but every platform can be let down by photography, video or graphics that don’t reflect and elevate the brand behind it. Too often, visual content is left until the final stage of a digital project, when in reality it’s one of the most powerful tools for communicating your brand’s identity, values and professionalism and is a crucial element of ensuring your new website delivers the impact it deserves.
The Enigma content design team caught up with award-winning photographer Christopher Owens to discuss how to get the best out of your platform when it comes to visual content, and why it pays to plan early.
1. Photography sets the tone of your brand
“Images are often the first thing people see and the last thing they remember,” says Chris. “If they don’t feel authentic, it can dilute all the hard work you’ve put into your new platform.”
That doesn’t mean avoiding stock images or AI altogether, the key is direction and consistency when choosing what content to share. It’s all about helping your customers and clients understand who you are and connect with you through visual language. While you can absolutely mix photography, AI, and stock content, the key is defining your visual tone and choosing images that look like they belong to the same world - when you make thoughtful choices with your content, your website feels cohesive, confident, and deliberate.
2. Start by building a visual library
One of the best ways to set that foundation is by working with a photographer or content design expert to capture the cornerstones of your brand.
This could include:
- People – authentic, expressive portraits of your team, customers, or community.
- Brand photography – products, spaces, or textures that visually represent what you do.
Once you have these authentic images, you can supplement them with carefully chosen stock or AI-generated visuals that extend your library, without losing consistency.
3. Remember authenticity builds trust
If you’ve made a significant investment into a website but fill it with generic stock photography, it sends the wrong message. “If you can’t take the same care and professionalism with your images,” says Chris, “what does that say about how you’ll deliver your product or service?”
Audiences can tell when images are real and when they reflect genuine people, places, and stories. Authentic visuals build trust, and trust can be the difference between winning a big client or losing them to a competitor.

4. Create unity across your digital estate
Your website isn’t the only place your visuals live. They’ll appear in presentations, proposals, social media, press features, and pitch decks. Give people imagery that they are proud to share across their own networks and you will amplify your reach far beyond your own channels. “A strong visual identity creates unity across your entire digital estate,” says Chris. “When everything feels connected, your brand feels more credible - and more memorable.”
5. Personality doesn’t mean frivolity
There’s a fine line between showing personality and trying too hard. Chris said, “People often confuse personality with gimmicks. You can absolutely show who you are without being frivolous or cheesy. It’s about subtlety, the textures, lighting, expressions, and colours that reflect your culture.”
One headshot or homepage hero image can’t do all the heavy lifting. Personality should flow naturally through every image and every page and be intrinsically linked to your strategic ambitions.
6. Investing in your visual identity pays off
High-quality, authentic imagery makes your website, and your brand, feel trustworthy, human, and distinctive. It helps potential clients picture themselves working with you and it tells them that you care. “If you invest in visual, dynamic content that is authentic to you, you can be confident that your competitor won’t be using the same image,” says Chris. “That’s the power of differentiation.”
Whether you’re building a new platform or refreshing an existing one, your visuals aren’t decoration, they’re strategy. Done well, they elevate every pixel of your investment. To speak to the team at Enigma about your digital ambitions visit our contact page.
