  • Enigma inspiring future digital talent on BIMA Digital Day 2024

Raising awareness of digital career opportunities to inspire the next generation.

For the tenth year running, we took part in BIMA’s national initiative, Digital Day 2024.

We teamed up with our friends at North East Futures UTC school in Newcastle to host an inspirational, action-packed day for students on Wednesday 20th November 2024.

    What is BIMA Digital Day?

BIMA Digital Day is an annual, UK-wide, one-day event, run by the British Interactive Media Association. Its mission is to give 11-16 year olds an insight into the world of digital and help them to discover the potential of a career in the digital industry.

The overall aim of the day is to provide inspiration, spark interest, and encourage students to consider choosing tech subjects at school. Our hope is that this will help students learn digital skills and enable them to work in this vibrant and growing sector.

There is a widening skills gap in the digital sector, and part of BIMA’s goal is to address this.   According to BIMA ‘In the last few years, digital has been growing at twice the rate of the broader economy; but unless we fix the skills shortage, that can’t continue’ Encouraging the next generation to get excited about pursuing digital skills and a career path in the field, it helps to support the sector’s growth and innovational future, and we’re here for it.

The day kicked off with an inspirational presentation by the Enigma team.

Students were given an insight into the digital industry. We covered key info, such as what is the digital sector? What sort of jobs and career opportunities exist within it? We also talked about life at Enigma Interactive and the digital work we do with clients. As a Digital Development agency, we work on and deliver digital solutions that impact a range of industries - we talked through examples of those in an effort to bring the world of digital to life.

A key part of the day is the ‘Digital Challenges’.  Every year they’re set and sponsored by well-known brands and are based on real-life client brief scenarios. The students are split into teams and choose one of the briefs to work on together. The challenge is to solve the brief by answering it using creative digital thinking.

The students presented their ideas and concepts to a judging panel that included the Enigma team and teachers, Dragen’s Den style! A winning team was chosen, and their innovative digital idea is now entered into a UK-wide competition with £500 up for grabs as a prize for the school. Good luck to the team at North East Futures UTC school!

Sally Taffs, Director of Holistic Projects, commented “We always look forward to taking part in BIMA Digital Day. This year was no exception. We were back at the North East Futures UTC school (for the fifth time!) and had a great day with their year 10, digital pathway students, helping them to work through one of the three challenges set by Microsoft, Burberry and the RSPCA. It’s fascinating, enlightening and often humbling to see the solutions that these creative young minds can come up with. At Enigma, we are committed to showing young people what digital is all about, in the hope that we will inspire some of them to take up a career in the industry.”

BIMA (British Interactive Media association) is one of the leading voices of tech and creativity in the UK, and their mission is to drive innovation and excellence across the industry and represent a community of businesses, charities and academia across the UK.

Note: This year, the official day of Digital Day 2024 was on Wednesday 12th November but as this date coincided with mock exams at NEF UTC, we had a special Digital Day 2024  together a week later, on 20th November 2024.
