  • Digital processes to drive the roll-out of on-street EV charging infrastructure

Enigma has created a series of digital processes that make it easier for installers to bring on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging to the communities that need it most.

The transition to electric vehicles is a vital part of the UK’s journey to a low-carbon future. Yet for many people, charging at home simply isn’t an option as residents without private driveways or garages need reliable access to public charge points, and the speed at which this infrastructure can be installed is critical.

Through the Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund, local authorities and installers are working together to bridge this gap by deploying on-street charging points in communities across England and accelerating investment in the sector.

When National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) took on the task of supporting this effort, they recognised that digital processes would be essential to complement their offline work. That’s where Enigma came in.

    From Information to Action

NGED needed a way to guide installers clearly and consistently through the LEVI process, from early interest in the scheme through to notifying the grid once an installation was complete. The team at Enigma worked with them to design and build a set of online tools and information pages that would streamline these journeys.

Our starting point was clarity. Using our Core platform, we developed a suite of content pages to explain the LEVI Fund and NGED’s role within it. Designed with flexible content objects and branded templates, these pages ensure the right information is accessible and easy to navigate and features such as accordions, call-to-actions, and search functionality help users quickly find the detail they need.

    Guiding Installers Through the Process

The next step was to create forms that translated the offline process into simple, structured online workflows.

Expression of Interest Form: Built using Core’s out-of-the-box form functionality, this enables installers to register their interest quickly and reliably, with custom consent checks to make sure responses reach the right team.

Notification Form: A more complex, multi-stage form designed to capture the full detail of a completed installation. Here, user experience was key - progressive disclosure, address lookups, file upload options, and clear progress indicators all work together to guide installers from start to finish without confusion.

By blending existing Core features with bespoke development, we created a digital solution tailored to NGED’s requirements, one that makes it easier for installers to do their part in the nationwide roll-out of EV infrastructure.

    Driving Change

The result is a set of online processes that not only streamline NGED’s work with the LEVI Fund, but also contribute to a bigger picture, enabling communities without private parking to access EV charging and helping the UK move towards a cleaner, more sustainable transport system.

For Enigma, this project reflects how thoughtful digital design can underpin large-scale change. For NGED, it’s another step in powering the low-carbon future.
