Thetford Priory is a renowned English Heritage site founded in the 12th century. It encompasses the extensive remains of one of the most important monasteries in the UK. After recent ground-breaking research and new archaeological finds at the 910 year old site by a joint team turned to Enigma to help bring this historic location to life.
WHAT WE DID
Working closely with teams from the University of Leicester, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, English Heritage, Oxford University and Yale Centre for British Art, we built an immersive app that works as a virtual tour assistant.
The app provides an in-depth, experience for visitors to the site and includes information on Tudor history, cultural research, e-learning, art history and the town of Thetford.
Our starting point was the design of the bespoke maps and the use of GPS location services to show the on-site users where they are and provide information ‘trigger points’ within areas of particular interest around the priory. When visitors get within these areas the app presents pictures, expert videos and interactive 3D renders of some of the important objects found by archaeologists, in relation to the user’s location on the site. This allows the user to unearth hidden details and further information on their device - enhancing and enriching their visit further.
The iOS app features bespoke designs including a user focused interface with skeuomorphic elements, interactive maps, video and augmented reality, which allows visitors to use their camera to find a secret tomb hidden in the grounds of the priory once they have gathered enough information around the site.
The development also houses educational resources to support teachers using the app both onsite and in the classroom and the content can also be triggered offsite with QR codes if required.
The app provides an in-depth, experience for visitors to the site and includes information on tudor history, cultural research, e-learning, art history and the town of Thetford.
