The Ambition
Realising Opportunities is a national collaboration of leading research-intensive universities working together to improve access to higher education for students from under-represented backgrounds. The programme supports talented Year 12 and 13 students through a series of academic activities, events and online learning modules that help them develop the skills and confidence needed to apply to university.
As the programme has grown, the team needed a digital platform capable of managing a complex network of universities, partner schools and thousands of students across the country.
The system needed to support:
- Applications from students across multiple partner institutions
- Programme delivery, including events, academic modules and skills development activities
- Coordination between universities, schools and central programme teams
- Clear, accessible information for students navigating a significant life decision
The ambition was not simply to maintain an existing platform, but to continually evolve the system, improving usability, performance and scalability as participation grows.
Working in partnership with the Realising Opportunities team, Enigma has delivered a programme of ongoing improvements to ensure the platform remains robust, accessible and fit for the programme’s long-term ambitions.
What we did
Improving the customer journey
Enigma focused on refining the digital user journey, ensuring that students can navigate the process clearly and confidently. Thoughtful consideration to content structure, navigation and interface design have helped make complex information easier to understand.
This approach ensures that the platform supports students who may be navigating the university application landscape for the first time.
Supporting a complex multi-partner programme
Realising Opportunities is delivered through collaboration between multiple universities, schools and programme administrators.
Behind the scenes, the platform must support a wide range of workflows including application management, programme activities, event coordination and student progression tracking.
Enigma has continued to refine the underlying system architecture, ensuring that data flows smoothly between the different stakeholders involved in delivering the programme. These improvements allow administrators to manage programme activity more efficiently while ensuring students receive a consistent experience.
Continuous usability improvements
Much of the recent development work has focused on improving clarity and usability across the platform.
Enhancements include refinements to interface elements, improved messaging and clearer explanations of programme stages and requirements.
While these changes may appear small individually, together they significantly reduce friction for users navigating the system.
