Canal & River Trust

The Canal & River Trust is a charitable organisation responsible for the care and management of over 2,000 miles of canals and rivers across England and Wales. Their work ensures that these historic waterways remain vibrant, accessible spaces that support biodiversity, improve community wellbeing, and play a vital role in climate resilience. From maintaining locks and towpaths to protecting heritage assets and wildlife habitats, the Trust helps millions of people enjoy the benefits of life by water. The team works to keep canals and rivers safe, attractive and available for everyone, whether for boating, walking, cycling, fishing or transporting goods. Alongside conservation and maintenance, the Trust delivers education programmes, community projects and volunteering opportunities that help people feel healthier and more connected to their local waterways.

We’re working with the Canal & River Trust to redevelop their mission-critical Waterway Management System – the platform used to manage incidents, closures and maintenance across the entire network. In the first phase of work, the Enigma team designed and delivered a mobile-first platform that brings together complex geospatial data, enables near real-time updates, and streamlines communication with both internal teams and the public across web, email and social media. Future developments include image upload functionality for incident notices and improved workflow management.
